NAACP Calls for Trump’s impeachment

Delegates to the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, NAACP, which is being held this week in Detroit, Michigan unanimously adopted yesterday a resolution calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump.
The NAACP, founded in 1909 by a group of civil rights leaders including W.E.B. Dubois, is the largest black organization in the United States dedicated to advancing justice for African Americans. Consistent with its tradition to adopt a number of resolutions that guide its actions for the upcoming year, the organization yesterday adopted a resolution calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump on the ground of his well-proven anti-black racism.
The resolution states:
“Donald John Trump has, with his bigoted statements, done more than simply insult individuals and groups of Americans. He has harmed the American society by attempting to convert his bigoted statements into United States policy.”
The resolution, drafted by U.S. Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas who earlier on failed to have the House vote on it last week,goes on to say:
“Be it finally resolved that Donald John Trump, by causing such harm to the society of the United States, is unfit to be president and warrants impeachment, trial and removal from office.”
The day before, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who so far opposes impeachment on the ground that more facts need to be put together to build a strong case for impeachment, appeared before the delegates to the convention. The speaker’s appearance came after that of freshman congresswoman from the very state of Michigan, Rep. Rashida Tlaib from Detroit, a lawmaker who had advocated for Trump’s impeachment for months, long before the ongoing call for impeaching Trump.
Tlaib, the first Palestinian American elected to the U.S. Congress, was one of four congresswomen of color that Trump attacked in one of his incendiary tweets last week, telling them to go back to their countries where they came from. (Three of the lawmakers were born in the United States.) Tlaib got a standing ovation from the convention participants yesterday when she stated: “I’m not going nowhere, not until I impeach this president.” She went on to say that the ‘squad,’ as the four lawmakers targeted by Tump in his racist tweets are known, is not just the four of them. “It’s beyond just the four of us. You are all the squad, trust me.”
The convention runs from 18 July to 24 July 24 at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit. More than 10,000 activists, organizers and black community leaders are present.
