President Trump? The gods must be crazy!

Bleeding heavily everywhere from self-inflicted wounds of proven women’s groping and blatant racist statements, and limping all the way to the finish line displaying ignorance of world’s affairs coupled with an economic agenda many renowned economists fear are dangerous for the United States and the world, Donald J. Trump shocked the world by winning the presidency on November 9. The Republican party applauded their man, who quickly tapped the party’s chairman, Reince Priebus, as his White House chief of staff.

While scared segments of the U.S. population took to the streets to protest the unthinkable, dangerous members of our society—some of whom Trump had nurtured during the campaign—were having a party. Among many others, 38-year-old Dallas, Tx native Richard Spencer, a key member of the radical conservative movement, was quoted in an article by reporter Caleb Downs of the Dallas News published on November 16 as saying about Trump:

“He’s not your father’s conservative. He’s not in this to promote free markets or neoconservative foreign politics or to protect Israel, for that matter. He’s in this to protect his people. He’s in this to protect the historic American nation.”

According to the newspaper, Spencer also said in a video he titled The Knight of the Long Knives: “This is a sign we have power.”

Sure, many Republican leaders have vehemently rejected the despicable values embodied by their flag bearer. But, with their embrace of Trump’s candidacy and their euphoria over his election, other members of the Republican party squarely spouse Trump’s racist ideas, his disrespect for women, his hostility towards Muslims, immigrants, handicapped and so many others.

Our system of government lies on a strong institutional foundation. It may not be easy for Trump to do some of the wild things he threatened to do, but he and his party are accomplice in opposing some of the values our nation stands for: liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all.

There is no going back on our democratic system’s verdict of November 9, 2016. We hold a presidential election only once every four years. The longest four years of our political life in modern times lie ahead of us.
