U.S. Secretary of State reaffirms U.S. ties with Nigeria

In a phone call yesterday to Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari, the new U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, reaffirmed the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United States.

The news was broken today by the State Department’s spokesperosn, Heather Nauert, who said the Secretary of State, during the call, underscored Buhari’s 30 April’s official visit to the United States.

Said Nauert:

The Secretary noted the longstanding relationship between the Nigerian and American people and underscored the themes of the April 30 official working visit of President Buhari to the White House.”

She added:

He recognised Nigerian leadership across the African continent on priorities we share: countering terrorism and other threats to peace and security, creating economic opportunity, fighting corruption, and advancing democracy and stability.”
